Enlisted in the 11th Infantry for 3 years on August 24, 1861. He was wounded at the battle of Fort Donelson, Tennessee on February 15, 1862 and discharged at Jackson, Tennessee on July 23, 1862. According to family, he was short in the hand and given a pension for his wound.
